Bernini and the birth of Baroque portrait sculpture.

Bust of Costanza Bonarelli (1636–38) from Gian Lorenzo Bernini is one of the most popular statues from Baroque period, which is displayed in The GETTY center Los Angeles from August 5 to October 26, 2008. Gian Lorenzo Bernini (Italian, 1598–1680) and his contemporaries in Rome transformed the portrait bust into a groundbreaking art form. With dazzling virtuosity, these artists were able to coax the living presence and personality of their sitters—creating a "speaking likeness"—from the intractable medium of stone. Constanza Bonarelli drove Gian Lorenzo Bernini mad with passion—and inspired him to conjure flesh from stone in one of his most breathtakingly lifelike marble portraits.

There are many sculptures, sketches and paintings from Bernini and Baroque artists, which were shown in the GETTY museum Los Angeles during the last weekend. That was such a great opportunity to experience the master piece of Bernini.

Sticky Images !!

These printed ads stick in my head with different viewpoints. The first one, which is an Architect'07 Fair, Thai temple hair grabs my attention with the visual art direction and the technique of designers to execute their concept and ideas. I have a question after I have seen the advertising for a hair conditioner. Why the art director presents their ad by using an illustration of a woman with a dirty hair? Global warming is the name of the last ad that is the stickiest image in my opinion. It makes me worry about my head a lot. Even the product of this ad is not a shampoo.

Universal Toy.

The concept for 2006-design competition was “Universal Toy”. Department of Export Promotion, Ministry of Commerce, Royal Thai Government took a great responsibility for this event. Designers and students in Thailand who wanted to submit their works had to design a toy, which could be played by all generation in the family. Beside, it should develop skills of players not only the children, but also the parent who play it with their kids.

Form Follows Function
I had designed this toy base on this quote “ Form Follow Function”. The form, shape and materials follow functions. The rounded rectangular-shape of two plates was designed for the safety. Players from both sides should see each other. Therefore, transparent acrylics were used as a material for those plates. The stick was put a number in one side and an icon on the other side, which was made from a wood.

How to play?

First of all, the first player has to choose icon from one side of the stick and out it through the plate from one to whatever (depend on two players). After the first player has put all sticks in the plate, the second player has to pull it of by its order from the first icon to the last icon. This toy develops many skills of every players such as, eye and hand co-ordination, and memorization.

Photobucket
The Bangkok International Gift Fair and the Bangkok International Houseware Fair (BIG & BIH) are annual events. You could find product designs from manufacturers and wholesalers, and also fresh ideas from young designers who win the annual competition such as; product design competition, graphic design competition, furniture deign competition, and more.
The reason why I have named this event, because when I was a undergraduate student in Thailand I won this competition and my design was shown in this annual event.
Next time I will talk about my design which was shown in BIG&BIH 2005.
